Slinging since 1984, Dave’s Cafe has survived fire, blizzards, power outages, Nickleback, and (it seems) multiple missed liquor license renewals. Located on Cloudcroft’s lovely boardwalk, Dave’s is known mostly for its burgers, but the kitchen serves up a broad range of dishes including sandwiches, salads, and a few Mexican plates. For the veg-head (besides salads), there’s a veggie burger, veggie ruben, veggie, philly, and veggie clapper, among others. A few years back, they served up a mean breakfast, but sadly they don’t sling in the mornings anymore.
All in all I’d call Dave’s a competent diner. The chile is not hot enough (“weak” and “Texan-friendly” come to mind), but that’s a common complaint I have in this town. And it can be hit-or-miss on having any chile in the house. They truly excel with their sandwiches (and the specials). I like their hand-cut fries (plain, seasoned, garlic’d) with skins on the tips (but The Bride is not a fan).
The most interesting item on the menu, courtesy of the crew at High Altitude, is the Lynda’s Special: peanut butter, bacon, tomatoes, and mayo on whole wheat bread ($9). I shared this with a friend, and it actually wasn’t too bad! The Bride has thoroughly enjoyed a grilled cheese (with green chile) and Green Chile Turkey Bacon Melt ($11). Another interesting menu item is the Mongrel Mountain Man Burger, a $50 one-pound burger with surprises on top. If you finish, you can join the Mongrel Wall of Fame and nab a free t-shirt.
