Our second stop on our tour of Austin Old Fashioneds (see our first stop for the deets on the club) was to Bartlett’s. Bartlett’s is a local steakhouse that slings up some dang good chow. But how are their Old Fashioneds?
There are two choices for Bartlett’s Rye Old Fashioned: one with Knob Creek rye whiskey ($14) and another with Angel’s Envy Rye ($19), both mixed with Angostura butters, orange, and Luxardo cherry, all served on a gassed ice ball.
We all started at the top with Angel’s Envy and were, well… underwhelmed. On the teetertotter of tension between the sweetness of sugar and the bite of alcohol, the alcohol’s the Albert on this inner-city playground. If you are looking for balance, it ain’t here.
I followed up with Knob Creek (since that was the default whiskey) with the same result. All in all, a disappointment. But the food was good (and we didn’t leave empty glasses on the table).
So, after Club Convening II, our rankings are:
- Fierce Old Fashioned from Fierce Whiskers (Fierce Whiskers Texas Straight Rye Whiskey [2nd gen], Angostura bitters, raw sugar, orange peel, and Luxardo cherry; $12)
- Bartlett’s Rye Old Fashioned from Bartlett’s (Knob Creek rye whiskey or Angel’s Envy Rye, Angostura butters, orange, and Luxardo cherry; $14 and $19, respectively)
