Pie Society is one of my fave lunch haunts while in San Marcos. For something like $10, you can get a slice, salad, and sip. I tend to go for a slice-of-the-day which is some creative concoction or the other (pizz-ology?) such as the Corn Man (garlic oil base, Tabasco, light mozz, goat cheese, bacon, spicy sausage, green bell peppers, and corn), Shredded Brisket (shredded brisket, elote, tomatoes, goat cheese, cilantro cream, valentina sauce, and fresh cilantro), the Peary Mason (had pears on it!), and The Ranch Hand (pizza sauce, shredded mozz, jalapeƱos, chopped bacon, sun dried tomatoes, and a side of ranch). The slices are savory while the salads are high quality and yin the yang of the slice. Various real-sugar fountain drinks and fancy iced tea (unsweetened) are available for free refills.
I’ve only ever ordered the slice, salad, and sip ($11), but I see, after gawking over their full menu, there are other options, including calzones ($10 to 12), Slice and Pint ($7, although the last thing I need at lunch is a beer…[but you can order up to 6 pm!]), a Meatball Sandwich ($9 to 13), and various salads ($5 to 14+). And, of course, full pies, including The Garden of Eden, El Diablo, The 78-666, The Tempeh of Doom, and The San Martian. You can also get a baked egg plopped on top of your pie ($2). They also have vegan options, including for the cheese.
The Society is one of the restaurants by the Katz Brothers, who also run Zelick’s at the old family filling station (and named after pawpaw) and the Dos Gatos kolache shop. The Bros have a great sense of style and sling a quality product. I am definitely part of the Katz Kulture!
