No food has been as associated with a generation as avocado toast has been associated with Millennials (with the possible exception of conquistador tacos with the Aztecs of the 1520s). So perhaps it’s not surprising that someone would promote avocado toast from an item on a cafe’s menu to a cafe focused on the item. Wisely, Toastique is more than a toaster’s pop and an avocado’s smash. It also provides other toasts, fruity bowls and bevs, and a standard array of espresso drinks. The storefront works as a cafe and coffee shop offering brunchy fare and free wifi until the early evening hours.

Toastique’s version of The Dish comes gorgeously adorned with watermelon radish, marinated tomato, chili oil, and a crown of microgreens on toasted five-grain bread ($14). If you prefer fewer grains or gluten-free, you have choices as well as additions such as a hard-boiled egg (+$2). Your toasty bottom can be topped with other toppings, including salmon, Italian, burrata, Greek, crab, and tuna, among others turning the toasts into sammies without the upper deck. We’ve also devoured the tuna ($14) and crab ($16) toasts. The Bride, somewhat hangry when we entered one evening, didn’t find the size of her gourmet tuna toast quite enough for dinner (“Gotta stop at Whatabuger!’), although we found our toasts yummy.

The location has a good vibe, and the clientele is multi-generational and not just youngsters blowing first-home down-payments on alligator pears. Ordering is fast-casual, but food can take a bit to arrive, especially during the lunch rush. Street parking is a challenge, but you can park in the garage and, after taking a photo of their get-out-of-jail-free QR code on the shelf just inside the front door, park for free. Bonus points for everything being compostable and not having to think about which can to use.

Toastique’s founder, Brianna Keefe, is a bona fide Millennial who started her restaurant in Washington, D.C. in 2018. She’s expanding her concept thru franchises, including this one. No word yet as to whether or not she owns her first home.
