tacology (miami, fl)

After our first stroll through the outdoor mural heaven of Wyndam Walls, we stumbled upon Tacology’s open space tatted with various tags and pastes. Seeking something light and easy on a Valentine’s Friday evening, informal tacos seemed to fit the bill.

Tacology isn’t what it appears to be from the street (and not in a bad way). We expected, but not in a clutch-your-rosary-beads-kinda-way, fast casual, but instead got the full monte. Three hostesses greeted us with the bubbliest guiding us to our table. While there is attentive waitstaff, ordering occurs at the table via a digital display (unless you are a pure Luddite upon which the waitstaff will gladly take your order). Everyone is remarkably happy and eager to help you.

We started with a couple drinks, The Bride ordering a Classic Margarita (tequila silver, triple sec, lime, and agave; $16) and me trying the Slushy Catrina (mezcal joven, chinola passion fruit liquor, lime, and agave; $20). The Classic was, indeed, classic and well done. I choose the Slushy Catrina since I used to be in a goth band called Memento Mori and the Slushy came in a skull. It, also, was delicious.

A round of ramekins full of salsa arrived, but with no chips ($2 a basket). The salsas were all fantastic, thick with flavor, some inducing small rattlesnake bites on the tongue. For an appetizer, we tried the server-recommended Guacamole & Chips (Mexican avocado, cilantro, onions, and serrano peppers; $17). Good, but nothing special (and not enough chips).

The tacos were really good, but the Chicharron Pulpo was phenomenal. The octopi in the Chicharron Pulpo (fried octopus chicarron, pico de gallo, and lettuce marinated in jalapeƱo mayo; $10) were chewy-crunchy-savory bits of heaven and worthy of return trips. We also tried the Chicken al Pastor (roasted chicken marinated in chile guajillo, white onion, cilantro, and pineapple; $7), Mushrooms (black mushroom tortilla, sauteed mushrooms, truffle oil, Parmesan cheese, micro epazote, and Maldon salt; $7), and Baja Fish (beer battered mahi mahi, pickled red onion, and chipotle mayo; $8). To finish the evening, we ordered the Flan (caramel; $12), an array of mini-flans swimming in honey0sweet caramel.

The vibe is youthful and Miami hip with the clientele consisting of couples and families. Rolling doors opened the space to a glorious evening, the lights and art of Wynwood beckoning.
