By the time you read this, East Side Pies on Burnet will be open (April 30th). ESP makes our fave pie: thin crust pep and cheese with blissfully hot green chile on top! I missed it last issue, but the owner of Gusto opened up Gràcia Mediterranean in ye olde Fluff Meringue location (see review this issue). Pokéworks (3022 West Anderson) is finally (finally!) open. Also just noticed that OneTaco has a residence at Little Woodrow’s. Across the way on Far West, Wonderkeks (cookies!) and The Soup Peddler (soup!) have opened. And the drive-thru Taco Shack at Anderson and Burrell at the former location of Baby Greens. The Jack-n-Jill of all trades, Burnet Go-To, has cheekily named its espresso-within-a-store bidness One Star Coffee. You can even get a One Star growler for the road. And, in a sign that summer is here, Snobowla at 5801 Burnet is now (consistently) open.
SAP’s Ver Fine Thai Cuisine (over by the Burnet HEB) has closed and will soon be replaced by KHON Thai Kitchen by SEEDA. The coming H-Mart at 5222 Burnet has a temporary sign up. Austin’s Very Own Saltt (definitely not a typo) is still in the process of opening. Carve American Grille and Verdad True Modern Mexican are actively under construction with spring-summer opening promised (Carve says “June”). Our vegan chickn joint on Anderson, Project Pollo, closed (the owner sold the franchise), and a Tikka Shack Indian Grub is expected to open by mid-July. In other sad news, Jewboy Sub Shop has stopped serving brunch—their Jewish migas (matza instead of tortilla chips and border style with green chile) was to get Pontius Pilated for. Pesker ‘em about it, and they may rise again!
I wrote this for the Allandale Neighbor. (June 2023, v 38, i 3, p 7)
