hit&run: rexall (uvalde tx)

A grad student and I, on the way to Brackettville to visit Las Moras Springs, stopped in to Uvalde to walk the murals honoring the students and teachers murdered by a school shooter and eat lunch. As we started to cross a busy street, I noted that there was a slick eatery behind us. A quick glance of the watch revealed that it was lunchtime, so we ducked in.

The first Rexall opened in 1888 with this Mid-Century Modern location opening in 1958. Rexall was a pharmacy but also a soda fountain (the only one between El Paso and San Antonio!). The current version no longer deals in drugs, but the soda fountain is still there as well as diner food.

I ordered the Spicy Chicken Sandwich ($8.5, served with kettle chips) while Corinne went with the Turkey Sandwich ($10, with kettle chips). The chicken sandwich was different in that the chick came in two separate hunks, but it was really good, although not terribly spicy. Corinne liked her sandwich but not the kettle chips (although I thought them chips were good).

The space is bright and cheery, the staff friendly, and the place decent busy. Some of the locals gave us the side-eye since we were not from these parts. We planned to stop back in for a Dr Pepper shake on the way back, but forgot (and it may have been too late).
