hit&run: the jerk shack (san antonio tx)

I learned about the Shack from Texas Monthly and, despite my stranding at the northern reaches of San Antonio for a conference, the Shack was nearby to sample. All I can say is, “Oh. Yeah.” The Jerk Shack is fast casual with a hip vibe and lovingly prepared dishes. It was even featured on Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” so you know it’s good. Nicola Blaque, the chef and owner (and 10-year veteran), brings Caribbean cuisine to the Balcones Escarpment with the full flavor and spice of the West Indies.

I tried the Mixed Chicken Plate (two jerk, two fried, two sides; $24) and found it filling (easily two meals) and delicious. The jerk, my fave, sings with spices, but the fried crunches with pleasure. The chicken is juicy (get yerself some napkins) and savory. The sides are also ample and well made. The masala fries are “Famous” and deservedly so with a crispy crunch and dusting of spice. The potato salad was a revelation and dressed for an evening out on the town. Yes, the prices are on the high side, but this isn’t fast food: this is the real food with real quality and thought.
