#top50tacos: eddies taco house (san antonio)

One joy of munching my way through Texas Monthly’s Top 50 Tacos of Texas list is visiting places that I would never, on my own, ever discover. Eddies Taco House is one such place. The original location of this 50-year-old restaurant is in a nondescript building a few blocks off I-35/I-10 just south of downtown (with a newer northern location on Thousand Oaks). As a loner, I sat at the bar. After receiving a compliment on my Japanese cat shirt by one of the waitresses and answering a question of how many cats I had (eight!), every female employee came out to meet me and talk about cats. A good way to start the meal!

TM’s recommended taco is the admittedly basic (but beautiful!) bacon, egg, and cheese taco. I stopped in for a late lunch and was pleased that breakfast (and breakfast tacos) are served all day. Given the price point (less than $4 a taco), I ordered two, the recommended one and a mystery one named “Country with Gravy” (which sounds like Garth Brooks lathered up for a “Debbie Does Dallas” remake).

Oh my.

The magic in an Eddies taco is the tortilla. These babies are the size, thickness, and strength of a well-made papasan cushion (and I’m only slightly exaggerating). These flour tortillas are thick and pillowy and nearly plate sized. Their size and high tensile strength allow for an ample serving of fillings, and Eddies tops the tank. That bacon, egg, and cheese taco was the best I’ve had, and, at $3.99 + $0.79 for cheese, one of the best values. All I needed was that one taco to move happily on with my life, but I had another taco to devour. The Country and Gravy is a diced kielbasa sausage lathered in flavorful gravy. More of a lunch taco, it was also a savory delight. I lumbered out of Eddies with a post-Thanksgiving gluttony glow.

All in all a great stop. I would have no hesitation coming back for another BEC!
