One joy of visiting restaurants is discovering a hidden and unexpected joy. I was visiting a colleague’s cabin on Canyon Lake to assess the potential for rainwater harvesting for rain-bathing. He used to run the spa at the Menger Hotel next to the Alamo and is deeply into balneology, the scientific study of the therapeutic uses of natural mineral water, hot springs, and muds (and, perhaps, rainwater). Coincidentally, when I was at a rainwater harvesting conference a few weeks earlier, a rainwater installer glowed with the benefits of rainwater bathing. Lunch was part of if my visit, and he took me to The D’Vine House Bistro, a small place on the side of a rural road.
“The new owners know how to cook,” he said as we sat down at a picnic table under a post oak out front. We rushed to get there before the lunch rush, and, indeed, there was a lunch rush as the parking lot quickly filled up. We both ordered one of the day’s special: green chicken enchiladas. What can I say more than the photo above? The chicken was high quality, the food tasty, and the green even had a wee bit of a bite to it. My pal brought out a slice of chocolate cake that was moist and a tongue dancer.
The D’Vine is quite a bit out of my way to make it a regular stop, but if I’m ever out in these parts again, I won’t hesitate to stop in and try a different dish. And be careful: there is a Devine Bistro in the area, so spell it correctly.
