Allandale Quick Bites: Neon Bellyaching, Jetts jetting, and brekkies brekking!

There’s a lot happening on the local food scene! Citizens All Day, an Aussie-inspired café now open in the neighborhood, is now open and serves classic brekkie like eggs, pancakes, and hash browns. I review it this issue—and yes, I tried “The Vegemite Experience.” Nearby, Kesshō, an Asian chocolate and gelato trailer, just opened at 6726 Burnet beside Asado’s Taqueria. Look for gelato sandwiches, espresso, Mission-style burritos, and a self-service flower fridge (great if you’re in the doghouse) at this trailer park.

Jet’s Pizza is expanding from its Austin airport location to 7301 Burnet, bringing Detroit-style pizza goodness to the hood. Stinson’s Bistro at 45th and Burnet has closed but plans to return as a trailer at the Shell station across the street. In its place will be La La Land Kind Café, a purveyor of lattes, coolers, and toast that supports foster kids. Golden Eye Chocolates has consolidated to its Anderson Lane location. Rockin Rolls has become Rockin Raspas for the summer due to oven vs. summer issues—they’ll bring back the rolls in fall! The Backspace on Anderson and Jan Chi Korean BBQ on Spicewood have closed, and Little Hen won’t be opening at 7001 Burnet after all.

Additional newcomers include Velvet Taco (taking over Flyrite at 6539 Burnet), Banjoo (Korean fusion and karaoke at 5222 Burnet), and Neon Belly (a pink bakery with kitties at 8312 Burnet). Foxtail Lounge will be mixing next to Mama Betty’s. Fonda San Miguel’s bakery Tzintzuntzan is now delayed until fall while work continues infinitely on H-Mart. I’m not sure what’s going on at ChefSuite at 8023 Burnet, but Double Daves, Panang Future, Sushi Box, and Hawaiian Bros are all slinging there.

On the accolades front, Stiles Switch BBQ (a hop, skip, and jump to 6610 North Lamar) made Texas Monthly’s Top 50 BBQ Joints list, and Yelp ranked T-Loc’s Sonora Hot Dogs at 5000 Burnet as the eight best food trailer in the U.S., with the nearby Paprika ATX (6539 North Lamar) and Bodhi Viet Vegan (2301 West Parmer) not far behind.

Until next time, keep eatin’!

  1. Hello, I enjoy your updates here and in the Allandale Neighborhood Newsletter. I did want to let you know that Double Dave’s has not been at Chef Suite – for at least a month or so. I tried ordering from that location online and it wasn’t there any longer. (I think Chef Suite hasn’t update it’s info.)

Looking forward to having Velvet Taco nearby!
