New places are springing into action! Roya (Persian) is now open (7858 Shoal Creek) and looks gorgeous. tzintzuntzan, Fonda San Miguel’s side hustle bakery/café at 2302 West North Loop (say zin-zun-zan), is now open and is also a stunner. Old Jerusalem (3808 Spicewood Springs) and SOSU Izakaya & Sushi Bar (6701 Burnet) are also now fully open. Three Cowboys Brazilian Steak Truck rolled into the trailer park at 2525 Burnet. Phở Tin at 2438 West Anderson (between Hopdoddy and Tikka Shack) closed and will be replaced with a new Vietnamese joint named Anh Em (which means brothers). Anh Em just had their soft opening at the end of February and may be fully operational by the time you read this. Although not in the neighborhood (but in the tummihood), Paprika ATX (6539 North Lamar), which would have made Texas Monthly’s top 50 tacos in the state if it hadn’t been between places, is open and James Beard-recognized P Thai’s Khao Man Gai & Noodles is open at 4807 Airport.
Outlaw Pizza is taking over the ovens at ye olde backspace space at 1745 West Anderson. Work at H-Mart is still blowing and going as is work at La La Land Kind Café at the old Stinson’s location. I had hoped that the redevelopment at 7320 Burnet (the former Genie Car Wash between Ichiban and El Mercado) might host some mixed-use foodie goodies; instead, we are getting a five-story storage unit. Go figure (and store your stuff). I’m worried about Pita Fusion (2525 West Anderson) since it continues to reduce its hours. Barley Swine made James Beard’s nominee list for outstanding hospitality (national) while Thai Changthong of P Thai’s Khao Man Gai & Noodles made the list for Best Texas Chef. Yelp included Bird Bird Biscuit in its list of the Top 100 Restaurants in the US. Matt Odam, Austin’s second-best restaurant reviewer, recommended the French onion soup at epicerie as one of the city’s best soups. Let’s hope for another cold front to bring back soup weather! Keep eating (and slurping)!
