Allandale Quick Bites: Change at Thom’s, Korean karaoke, and brekkies on the way!

Closings, openings, and a re-tread: Read (and eat) all about it!

Thom’s Market closed all its locations on April 20th after 18 years in business. That included our outpost at 5901 Burnet; however, two days later, Austin’s Select Market reopened the locations as the same stores with a different sign. Yeni’s Fusion has rolled from The Aristocrat Lounge (nèe Poodle Dog) to the front yard of the Night Owl at 8315 Burnet. The short-lived Foxtrot at 4818 Burnet is being replaced by Citizens All Day, an Australian joint that serves brekkie (eggs, pancakes, biscuits, and hash browns), chicky, salads, and something ominously titled “The Vegemite Experience.” Banjoo is going in at 5222 Burnet with Korean fusion and karaoke so that you can sing to your supper.

Biderman’s Deli on Far West is “temporarily closed” according to its Facebook page and Google Maps due to the death of its owner in mid-April; however, the web page is down, and it’s been a few weeks without any activity. Note that THE Biderman sold the business a few years back, so this is not him. Fonda San Miguel has pushed the opening of its next-door Mexican bakery and café concept, Tzintzuntzan, from the spring (March) to the fall while work continues on H-Mart, Mama Betty’s, and Little Hen.

CultureMap Austin included Barley Swine and DipDipDip Tatsu-Ya in its list of the ten best restaurants in town. Matthew Odam, Austin’s second-best restaurant reviewer, included China Family (ours is an Express) and An Nyeong Korean Tofu House in his list of top-25 Asian restaurants in Austin. Eater included Top Notch, Dan’s, Billy’s on Burnet, and JewBoy, among the best burger spots in Austin. Eater also shouted out Troy and Phoenicia Bakery & Deli as among the best Middle-Eastern restaurants in town.
