allandale quick bites (sixth bimester 2021)

ye olde biscuit from Bird Bird Biscuit

Santa Stomach gifted us early this year with the opening of Bird Bird Biscuit on Koenig, a good place to develop a jolly demeaner (as well as a waistline). Also newly opened is the highly-rated China Family at Northcross. Previously reviewed Old Thousand (4805 Burnet) has opened their dining space for the full-dope Chinese experience. Across Mopac is the newly opened 5280 Burger and Taphouse (7032 Wood Hollow), the Austin outpost of a Denver burger bar (5280 is the number of feet in a mile in an homage to the Mile High City). Little Beast Slider Company, Pollo Campero, and The Impossible Shop have opened at Kitchen United (while Camile Thai, Greenleaf, and Mekato have gone coal dark). Bao’d up appeared to have gone belly up at Kitchen United last issue but are back! Over at the 5000 Burnet Trailer Park, Little Beast Sliders slid over to Kitchen United replaced by Smokin’ Banh Mi. Also new at the park is Rockin’ Rolls pizza rolls. We still await the openings of Pflour Shop Bakery, East Side Pies, and Rise Souffle.

The Kudos Elves has been hammering away the past bimester. Tiny Pies got some Thanksgiving love from Austin Culturemap for their (ahem) tiny pies. CultureMap also prop’d Chi-lantro for its kimchi mole at the Austin Food + Wine Festival. The over-sugared folks at Eater Austin recommended Chez Zee, Fluff Meringues & More, Jack Allen’s Kitchen, La Patisserie, Lick Honest Ice Creams, Lucy’s Fried Chicken, and Tiny Pies for your holiday pie and sweet tooth needs and La Patisserie and Brentwood Social House for ye general baked goods. If you are looking for a private dining room to avoid Omicron, Eater rec’s Chez Zee and Fonda San Miguel. Want to eat and shop? Épicerie. Eater also ate its way through breakfast, recommending Pacha Organic Café, Upper Crust Bakery, and Bird Bird Biscuit. Finally, Eater gave a shout-out to Citizen Eatery for vegan treats, Ichiban for sushi, and dipdipdip tatsu-ya and Barley Swine for upscale dinners. Thrillest included Pinthouse Pizza, Little Deli & Pizzeria, Bufalina Due, East Side Pies, and The Backspace in their list of “The Absolute Best Pizza in Austin.” For the holidays, Eater recommended the Butter Tortilla Candle from HEB as a Christmas gift, and Whataburger released their latest seasonal sweater.

Until next time, remember: leave local food gift cards out for Santa instead of cookies!
